When traveling in or out of China, it's essential to be aware of the cash limits. These restrictions apply equally to both foreigners and Chinese citizens.
Understanding Account Types
Foreign Currency
The maximum amount of foreign currency (excluding Chinese Yuan) you can carry in cash is equivalent to 5,000 US dollars.
Chinese Yuan
The maximum amount of Chinese Yuan you can carry in cash is 20,000 CNY.
Exceeding Limits
If you're carrying foreign currency exceeding the equivalent of 5,000 US dollars but less than 10,000 US dollars, you'll need to obtain an "Exit Permit for Carrying Foreign Exchange" from a bank.
For amounts exceeding 10,000 US dollars, you'll need to apply for the permit from the State Administration of Foreign Exchange.
Important Note:
To avoid potential issues at customs, it's advisable to minimize the amount of cash you carry and consider other payment methods like credit cards or traveler's checks.
