Trump designates Official US language!

2025-03-03

US President Donald Trump issued an executive order on March 1 making English the official language of the United States.

The designation of a single official language is "in the best interests of the United States" and aims to "promote unity, foster a common American culture among all citizens, and ensure the continuity of government," among other things, which will not only facilitate communication but also "strengthen shared national values and enhance social cohesion and efficiency."

For new Americans, "speaking English not only opens doors economically, but also helps them integrate into society, participate in national traditions, and give back to society."

Trump ordered the repeal of an executive order issued during the administration of Democratic President Bill Clinton that required federal agencies to guarantee access to their services to people with limited English proficiency.

The new executive order does not require federal agencies to change the services they currently provide or to stop providing documents, products and other services in languages other than English.

The United States has no official language, and English is the most widely spoken language in the United States, with some states previously designating English as an official language, according to a U.S. government website. For decades, some members of Congress have tried unsuccessfully to push for legislation to make English the official language.

According to data released by the US government in 2019, nearly 68 million people in the United States do not speak English at home, including more than 40 million who speak Spanish at home.

The Spanish-language version of the White House website was shut down during Trump's first term in office and brought back online when Joseph Biden took office. After Trump returned to the presidency in January, the Spanish-language version of the White House website was shut down again. The White House responded at the time that the Spanish version would be restored in the future, but so far it has not been restored.
